We just published the next episode of The Magic Lantern. Episode 004 features Adele Friel Rhindress, one of magician Harry Blackstone, Sr.’s assistants. She was Blackstone’s “Elusive Moth” in the show.
This interview was recorded at Bob Little’s Super Sunday convention in Philadelphia and was recorded as part of our Magic History Series, which was created to preserve the rich history of the art of magic, one story at a time.

I’m the Director of Photography for an independant short film called, “Proof Positive.” We are currently in the beginning of production. We began with the first day of principal photography on Saturday. These are a few shots from on set. We are shooting with the Panasonic DVX-100B.
I thought this was a RIOT! When my wife and I attended the caricature convention several weeks ago, we met so many great people there. One fantastic person and a great artist was Anthony, from Australia. While at the convention he did a caricature of me.
I must have been on my normal coffee dosage that day!
We’ve broadcast the second show of The Magic Lantern. While working on this show I started going through some archival footage for an exciting Show 3 and 4. In the meantime, enjoy this one!
Ok, this video is wrong in so many ways! I’ll warn you now. *Grin*
This was done for a client who owned a Mexican restaurant. He has a bartender who everyone knows simply as Paco. So the owner wanted to feature him. The rest is history.
I decided to create a digital, animated character. We were also on a crunch schedule. This was to start running during Monday Night Football, which was less than a week away. My wife designed the initial character on paper, then I modeled him in Lightwave. It’s similar to designing a puppet, except it’s all digital.
Once the character was done, I did a “matchmove.” This means that I had to match the actual camera movemements of the background plate to the digital set and CG camera. Once completed, I animated Paco and once finished, added him into the background plate.
Total animation time was around 2 full days (including modeling and animation). The rendering took a little longer, but we got the finished video to Comcast in time for Monday Night Football where it’s playing now!

Well, it took a few weeks (been really busy!), but I converted the Dorkboy animation I did over to YouTube’s server so you can watch it easier.
Several weeks ago, my wife and I went to a caricature convention in Orlando. The group was hosted by the National Caricature Network (or NCN). I entered this animation into the portfolio part of the convention sort of as a joke. I printed out each frame as a 4×6 inch photo at Walmart, then tied them together to form a flip book. It was great!
Anyway, here’s the animation!
It got plenty of laughs. Anyway, Dorkboy, as this character is being called, is going to be featured a bit more on the main site in the near future as the Reels in Motion site undergoes it’s makeover. I hope you like what changes have already taken place. I appreciate the emails everyone has sent!
